Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You

By John Ortberg

I read this book in February 2016. This is definitely up there on my Top 5 list. It only took a few days to read because I couldn't put the book down. When I read this book I was on a journey to rediscover myself, and particularly my relationship with Jesus. This book brought in to focus so many things that I had never thought about, and helped me think about them in a way that made sense. I walked away from this book with specifics on recognizing the needs of my soul, and how to take care of it and feed it spiritually.

"To love someone with your soul means your will, your choices, your mind, your thoughts, your feelings, your body, your behaviors, and your habits are aligned for the good of their entire being before God."
― John Ortberg - Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
"Your soul is what integrates your will (your intentions), your mind (your thoughts and feelings, your values and conscience), and your body (your face, body language, and actions) into a single life. A soul is healthy — well-ordered — when there is harmony between these three entities and God's intent for all creation. When you are connected with God and other people in life, you have a healthy soul."

"I would like to have looked deeply into many eyes; to connect deeply with many souls; to have people know that I noticed them and cared about them and actually loved them."
― John Ortberg - Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
"When my will is consistently, freely, joyfully aligned with what I most deeply value, my soul finds rest. That is wholeness. When I live with half-hearted devotion, my soul is always strained."
― John Ortberg - Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
"I and no one else am responsible for the condition of my soul."
― John Ortberg - Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
"I am responsible to take care of my soul not just for my own sake. The condition of my soul will affect the people around me, just as when my body is sick it can infect others who get too close."
― John Ortberg - Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
"Jesus humbled himself. Jesus took on the very nature of a servant. Jesus lived among the poor. He washed feet. He was struck and would not strike back. He was hated, and he loved back. He was condemned, and he forgave back."
― John Ortberg - Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
"To be truly grateful you must not only recognize the benefits or gifts that come your way, but that they are not just random acts; they are not accidents. They are coming from Someone who has good intentions for you. To be grateful as a Christian, you must believe that the good that is in your life comes from God. Not from your own efforts or merit. Not from others who might want to impress or manipulate you for their gain."
