Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
I finished this book on December 17, 2016. It was about a two-week read if you read a chapter per day. I read this book at the recommendation of Danny Anderson. I don't think I can summarize this book any better than a quote from the last paragraph of the book. "The very first step in the pursuit of humility is to recognize that I am not humble." I think it's safe to say that our lives, our relationships, and our world in general would be a better place if we all learned to be more humble and took steps to acquire true humility.
"Humility stands alone among the virtues in that as soon as you think you have it, you probably don't."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Humility is the noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Humility enhances the ordinary and makes the great even greater."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Since life is fundamentally about relationships, the relational virtues such as humility, compassion, trustworthiness and so on are keys to virtually all spheres of life."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"What we don't know and can't do far exceeds what we do know and can do."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Whether the universe was majestically designed by Someone or is the result of a glorious, imponderable Coincidence, believer and atheist alike can agree that we are infinitesimally small in this vast universe and infinitely blessed or lucky to be here."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"We are naturally attracted to the good and equally repulsed by the bad. When humility is sincere — when words are matched by behaviour — it is indeed beautiful."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Humility is not an ornament to be worn; it is an ideal that will transform."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"I imagine that humility not only signals security; it probably fosters it too. I am increasingly convinced that a healthy self-worth is rooted far more in service than achievement, far more in giving than taking."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Nothing is more valuable to us, and value-adding, than good relationships. Knowing that we are loved and valued by those we love and value is the predictor of a healthy sense of self-worth."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Mere reputation cannot match true character."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"It is a special kind of person who has so much to give and yet prefers to find out about others."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"Choose to act humbly, partly because it is often the best course of action anyhow, and partly because new patterns of behaviour can influence deeper patterns of thought."
― John Dickson - Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership
"The very first step in the pursuit of humility is to recognize that I am not humble."
